It’s time to stretch your concepts. In 1884, Willis Johnson patented the rotary egg beater. The instrument allows the concept of whisking to be transferred into gears. The gears, or blades, work in opposite directions. Therefore, the once slow rotation of a whisk becomes faster. And this results in a quicker blend.
At some point, an engineer probably decided this concept would work for industrial blenders. And, this may have been how the concept of the rotary drum blender was conceived.
These types of mixers have not been a mainstay in the United States. We have been home to the more common ribbon and paddle blenders.
